Was looking for some beta on Double Head. I am planning on taking the lady on her first alpine tour/descent. She is a very competent skier so I don’t think the terrain will present too much of a problem but I wonder about the snow conditions. I have never skied Double Head but understand that it is a western facing slope. I was hoping for some nice corn snow given the sun and warmer temps in the forecast for this Sunday. Has anyone been up to this area recently and could comment on snow cover? My largest fear is that there would be some rock jumping involved. I can’t imagine this would be the case given the awesome winter we have had but any info on this would be greatly appreciated.

i'll be up in the valley tomorrow and maybe thurs and will get an idea for conditions. double head takes a bunch of snow for good cover and this weekend isn't supposed to be all that warm from what i've seen. warm the next day or two then high, dry and below freezing up there for a week or two. gonna take some imagination to keep on good snow for the foreseable future. love the challenge. bring it on!

skied doublehead last sunday (2/8). cover was adequate.
pretty good up top. there is an old rescue cache on the left
heading up. below it there are a few spots where you need to get
creative in a few spots to keep your skis on. cover isn't as good.
you'll see them on the way up. the old cache is located nicely
to remind you to start paying closer attention on the way down.
the terrain below it is very flat anyways. the best skiing is from
the top down to about the cache.
i have the feeeling it will be crustycrunchy this weekend. -tom

They are calling for some rain in Jackson on Thursday so I'll be curious to see how much of that they get. Never been up to double head but can't wait to check it out. Rog I will be looking for your assessment after your trip to the valley today/tomorrow. Thanks and enjoy.

I'm just hoping OBS is right and we get snow on the back side of this system. That would be a gift, if it were enough. Doublehead's pretty low el. though. Here's hoping St. Valentine and Ullr both smile on your endeavor. Good luck.

unbelievably good skiing today at gos and wildcat. upper 40's and bluebird all day till 3pm when clouds came in. raining now and supposed to continue through a portion of tomorrow. snowpack is shrinking faster than a polarbear clubs members wee wee after the new years dunk in nova scotia. even the gos trail may require some portaging by tomorrow night. doublehead? not much snow in the valleys and less for the weekend. i wouldn't bother. thin cover and very firm snow this weekend. not much fun. will post a gos report later and drew has pics and vids.
will report.
