Sorry if this pic has been put on the website already... I don't have the time to read every threads unfortunately.
This is the plan for next season at :jaypeak: : 26 new trails, including 8 glades and 3 lifts :

Any thoughts about this new side?

My only thought is that whenever I'm at Jay, I look over at that peak and fantasize about how good the skiing looks on it. I mean, the closest you can get to it is Beyond Beaver Pond, and that's the best skiing on the mountain. If that new peak ends up anything like BBP, then we're in for a lot of fun.
Good find by the way, I had been wondering when this expansion was going to happen and what it would look like.

Fantasize about skiing it? It's been good skiing. Now everyone will ski where others have enjoyed for years. We all need our own OB stash. "All good things are wild and free." None the less, Jay Peak rocks and always will, as long as they continue to have their glades and remote powder stashes that only the few know about. Cheers all!

Chopper, I sympathize. Nothing ruins tree skiing like a new lift and groomed runs.

My opinion is somewhere in the middle of you.
I mean : I went twice at Jay Peak and although there was 16" of fresh snow both times, it was some heavy snow, tough to ski, so I didn't particulary liked the mountain (especially as the tough stuff was unskiable and closed both times).
So I don't have something to lose with this new side and I'm eager to see how it will be and if they will make some natural trails in the Castlerock / MRG kind.
On the other side, I'm sad for the loss of backcountry skiing, cause me too, I really like this.
But a sure thing is that this side will probably not attract so much new skiers, compared to before, so this will spread the skiers on all the mountain and the powder situation on the main side should be quite better than actually. The only problem for me is that I don't know how they will make this side profitable and considering the not so high profits of Mont Saint-Sauveur International (owner of Jay Peak), they will rush...

I guess my point is that there will still be plenty of excellent OB and backcountry skiing in the North East even if/when Jay Peak develops Beyond Beyond Beaver Pond. It's certainly not going to degrade the quality of skiing people can get at Jay.
And as Frankontour said, it will only spread the skiiers out more.

oh man, i cant wait! living in western mass and not having my license keeps me from visiting killington often but i try to as many times as i can per season. once these trails are finished it will give me and even bigger excuse to get up there tons. once again, i cant wait.. .

I for one am pretty pissed off at :jaypeak: about this. That stuff is good skiing, and only those who venture out into the BC go there. Now there will be access to every dingleberry on the mountain. I hate dingleberries.

I would have to agree that it opens up some nice BC to more people. There's still other areas around there <cough>Big Jay<cough><cough>
I'm feeling sad that :cannon: is opening up parts of Mittersul & putting that skier's-right-of-tramline glade on the map. The glade used to be a great powder stash when it wasn't on the map, and you had to duck through the woods to get to it. Now it will probably get much more skied, like the on-mountain glades.
Mittersul, although it was hardly a secret before, will now get even more tracked up with a lift & real trails & stuff...
