Hey all,

I'm looking for a ski traverse to do in the above mentioned area as a training run prior to the Wapta Traverse in 2 months or so.

Is there anything in that area that would take me about 2-3 days to do? Anything like that around?

Anyone interested in doing it?

Thanks,
Marc

i got one! start in newfields in the seacoast region and traverse on the abandoned railroad grade for 35 miles or so to manchvegas. from there you can head south to the lowell pole or west to the g or north to our state capital.
bring all survival gear and don't talk to strangers.

Check out the Catamount Trail in Vermont. It's probably a bit mellower than the Wapta, but might be the ticket.

Is this supposed to be some kind of humorous/ironic understatement?

Wapta is awesome. I've been out on parts of it twice and it been super fun.

Around here there will be a good number of ups and downs that are not really skiable so that adds to the difficulty. There are a bunch of long railroad grades but usually we try to avoid those when hiking.

Places to check Pemigewasset Wilderness, over to 13 falls campsite, then maybe around up to Zeland Notch. I also think there are some that cross the presidentials too but I can not think of them right off.

Something else you may consider is the Chick-Chocs up in the Gaspe.

It's like comparing meadows to mountains...;)

But it was a serious suggestion nonetheless. If you want something a bit more...exposed... How about doing a Pemi traverse, except rather than sticking low, sticking high. Start down towards Woodstock, go up, traverse Franconia Ridge, keep going through the Bonds, ski down to Zealand, climb up Tom, and glide out to Crawford. Better?

PEMI WOULD BE GREAT!!! Catamount would be fun but, I'd go for the Pemi!!!

Or, put something together in the Adirondacks....Dix Wilderness Area or Wright/Marcy areas....long approaches and good vert but, actual touring wouldn't be anything like in Canada. You'd have to carry snowshoes, I think....trails can get narrow and steep. Especially in the ADK's...where things are less obvious...

I've been looking for partners for a day trek up to Carter Notch but, it will have to wait until I'm back from the Alps. I'm itching for an Adirondacks trip once I'm back....so, if we have the snow to support a sweet tour in New York, I'm totally game!!!!

Nobody has mentioned Baxter State Park? Lots of options there, but more red-tape.

I thought about baxter but, Kathadin is more about the approach rather then a sweet tour....given the drive and red-tape, which isn't all that bad once you deal with it, I think the Dacks are more worthwhile...just as strenuous, but less mind-numbing and way more fun and exciting! BTW, if anyone does have Baxter plans and has room for another....I'll pack my sled.....anytime after the second week of March would be great!

I was just in baxter last week and it is really nice touring (so much snow!!!!) but a very far drive. You can tour around the park though without bothering with the approach to Chimney pond / Katahdin. Also If you don't camp in the park it's open to day use for touring without all the tape. Definitely enough miles up there to keep you busy. Good luck.
