Taken with the usual grain of salt, but I'm looking for something to be optimistic about, and I found it in Henry Margusity's blog today:

3. Very, very cold weather Thursday into the weekend. Ski resorts should be loving life the next three weeks in the East...

4. Clipper will come down across the Great Lakes into New England this weekend. A swath of light snow will occur north of a line from Atlantic City to Pittsburgh to Dayton to Chicago to Minneapolis. Snowfall will be in the range of 1-3 inches. New England may get 3-5 inches of snow as the clipper strengthens and even NYC may even pick up 2-3 inches of snow Saturday night.

5. The fun will begin as the weather in the East remains very cold up to Christmas, and a series of storms will be moving across the East. The next big storm to watch will be Monday and Wednesday. GFS will cut it into the eastern Lakes while the DGEX and Euro take it off the Virginia coast.

no, i don't. just speaking from my past experiences, ocd weather pattern study, and my gut. look at the winter of 05/06. lean start, great jan-no thaw. 06/07, pathetic start and friggin other worldly epic from mid jan till april. last year, great start-60 degrees in early jan after new years of course and above ave temps all month. this year, great start here, lean in the west, gettin cold and a bit snowy through x-mas and then the snow drought in places like the wasatch that will start gettin dumped on in jan and we get warm from the ridge that they had that will shift our way. utah is hurtin for certain right now. alta's got like a 20 inch base. the wasatch doesn't even start to "happen" till the 80 inch base mark hits. i feel sorry for those that book trips out west before jan 1st cuz ya just never know. one winter i lived out in the wasatch the east was gettin killed, winter of 95/96 and i was ridin my mountain bike in albion basin around alta till x-mas, then we got 22 feet in jan with one storm dumping 11 feet in 5 days, ya, talk about zero to hero in no time. we get what we get and typically weather patterns don't last longer than 4-6 weeks. all i know is that sunglasses and temps in the 40's at sunapee on smooth surfaces is appealing to me right now given what we have up north from the funky sunday/monday thang.

typical yes, but then there was jan of 1994. was workin at the riv and we got 9 feet that jan with no thaw and record cold. 3 days straight 38, 40, 42 below without the windchill. didn't even bother to start the old crx. what a spring that was on george. then jan of 1995 saw record warmth. the summit of washington stayed above freezing day and night for 11 days straight. on jan 18th that year i hiked to the summit in shorts, leather boots and a t shirt. on the summit i pulled on a shell and took it off for the descent. sunday river went from 120 trails open to just 6 trails that jan and the bowl didn't look much better in march of that year than it does right now. the west however had one of the best winters on record and i spent a month (may) in british columbia in my girlfriends truck eatin canned food, skiing the leathers on the cheap. 8000 miles driven, 18 days on snow, slept in the truck, ate in the truck. total cost of trip-700 bucks, no ****. and that included my only speeding ticket ever, in manitoba-39 bucks, a bargain. good times.

Yeah, I checked out J-Hole's page yesterday, and they seem way behind. Only 24" or so base (but lord, the last few years, they've gotten epic dumps between Christmas and New Year's - wonder if it will happen again). My bro in the Bay Area reports that the Norther Cali mountains are bare. Said Kirkwood is dirt. I hear the PacNW has been all rain.

Just crossin' my fingers that we have a season that's even close to last year. What a great season that was. And hey, two years ago, we had zilch from mid-Dec to mid-Jan, and then the sky began puking pow for two months! Valentine's Day was so friggin' epic, I'll never forget it (39"). So if a Jan thaw is in the offing, so be it -- so long as Feb & March deliver the goods!

Ya know? I honestly don't think we can rely on predictability of our weather anymore other than it will be colder in the winter and warmer in the summers. There's a very good possibility that there will not be a JanThaw... AND if we get a couple more volcanoes popping in the next few weeks then we might be skiing in snowstorms this summer!

But what do I know? I only listen to the wisdom and word uttered by ULLR and he says you better have your hat and goggles on hand at all times this winter!
All praise the mighty and benevolent ULLR! http://www.techsourceconsultants.com/coppermine/albums/userpics/10020/worship.gif
