I know, it's early and these guys generally don't know their a$$ from a hole in the ground when it comes to predicting anything more than 3 days out, BUT, it's good enough to start getting me stoked! I've highlighted my favorite parts:

AccuWeather.com Meteorologist Joe *******i Forecasts Coldest Winter in Five Years

AccuWeather.com Chief Long-Range Forecaster Joe *******i today released his 2008-09 Winter Season Forecast addressing issues of average temperature and precipitation impacting the nation. His forecast calls for one of the coldest winters in several years across much of the East.

The core of cold was centered across the Midwest last year but is expected to be farther east this year. *******i says the winter of 2008-2009 will be viewed as the hardest in several years. "It may be a shock to some when compared with the above-average temperatures of last year in the East. It will put some 'brrrrrr' in the saddle of folks who have not had to deal with such things for a while," he cautions.

"In the eastern half of the nation, people will look at the winter as bookends of cold," *******i said. He says the overall colder and snowier winter will be off to a cold start in December with perhaps the roughest winter month for much of the nation. It may finish with another cold spell in late January and February.

Between the bookends of cold, *******i expects "the January thaw of old winter lore" but it will offer only a temporary break to consumers. "The winter as a whole in the population-dense eastern third of the nation will be a one-two punch of higher heating prices and lower temperatures. Given this economic environment, the winter will push some homeowners to the brink," he concludes. In some cases, homeowners trying to keep their residences as warm as last winter could spend hundreds of dollars more this heating season.

Temperatures across most of the West will be warmer than last year and should be warmer than normal, which will help consumers by keeping heating cost increases in check. The northern Rockies and Northwest will still have more snow than normal but not as much as last year, where some locations developed a snow pack that reached twice normal levels.

The Midwest was blasted by snow last year and many communities ran very low on salt to keep roads clear of ice. Despite the elevated cost of salt this winter season, these areas will receive a break in the form of less snow than last year. Unfortunately, the East will not turn out as lucky, as more snowfall than last year is expected.

when winters get hyped for certain locals, the opposite usually occurs. so, warmer than usual with little precip may be more like it. or cold start with no snow, followed by a warm jan with some rain then a cold precipless finish.
nice and warm this week, the cycling is epic!

NO January Thaw! I don't want to hear about setting up a nice base, then melting it all away. It will stay below freezing on ALL mountains ALL winter here in the Northeast.:chicken:

Bah Humbug! This is all a buncha malarky and will NOT come to pass.... ;)

ULLR confided in me recently when I was in deep meditation in the Himalayas... If you liked last year....get ready for memories like those of yesteryear (late '60's)... I cannot say more at this time.... you are not ready to hear it yet. :D

M@ My guess is you're right. Last time I tested Murphy's Law re winter conditions was when I let the maple in the front yard drop all the leaves before raking, lazy basterd that I am. Driveway was a foot deep in leaves, then rain, freeze, then snow. (and my wife had the audacity to complain when I wanted to ski on the fresh, rather than deal with the mess). Given your broken blower, it'll snow as soon as you can't find the right size shear bolt or tool to fix the damn thing. Guaranteed, this will be the one time the weather media gets it right. I want to be paid as well to be wrong so often. Good luck, and thanks for your contribution to all the snow.;)

Does Bas+ardi ever -not- forecast cold and snowy?! :)

Glad to hear M@'s snowblower is broken. If it helps the season, I'm happy to break anybody else's as a proactive service...
