View Full Version : what do you do to get in shape for the season?

As we get closer and closer to slappin' on the sticks and skins, I was wondering what regular routine do you do to get in shape for the season? Anything unusual or as a seasonal ritual?
I have kicked up my routine of calistenics, free weights, and running, not to mention dragging my little girl (dog) around the neighborhood twenty six feet behind me as I run each morning (hoping the neighbors won't report me for abusing my dog). She's not into it as much as I am.
Last year was my first year out on Tele gear and in the BC with it. I was so stoked with every aspect of Telemark and how it added an entirely new dimension to 42 years of downhill fixed heel skiing that I am giddy with anticipation of this season. Although I have alot to develop in technique, I was amazed at how easy the transition was.
Free your heel, ski for real!!! is my new mantra.
Hope the rest of you are as excited about this season as I am.
Cheers to 2008/09 season! bring it on!

Note is said BEER.....wine and martinis are still fine on weekdays:)

I've substituted a few beers for Canadian Whiskey and Water. The problem is they go down fast and I found out I drink alot of them. So I start with 1, then 2, then 3, then 4, then... You get the picture.

And I have found it doesn't leave me with a hangover.

And on the Gin side, have you tried Hendrick's? Amazingly smooth stuff.

And on the wine side, When I went to pour a glass from a big bottle of shiraz I opened two nights previous, I asked my wife who had been hitting the wine, she looked at me funny and said, well your the only one who's been drinking it. I wasn't even able to fill a glass. :(

Guess I am not drinking enough. I'll work on that harder. Guess the potatoes in my vodka can help my carbo loading too.

look up "lunges" in the workout databases on line. Lunges are tele specific.

Workout:

Make two martinis (the style is up to you)
take the two martini glasses (poured full) to your workout station
Assume an athletic stance and hold the martinis level, one in each hand. first attempts should be with flexed elbows.
commence lunges, slowly enough to not spill a drop.
after 40 alternating lunges drink half of each martini
do another forty and drain'em

repeat twice more.

skiing and riding is what i do to get in shape (or out of shape as the last few years have brought injuries that take that much longer to heal), there is no getting in shape prior to the season...

yeah yeah if i was in shape to begin with, then maybe there would be fewer injuries, but that would require me to exercise, and that isn't any fun.

and wine is just fine during the week. buy it by the box...much cheaper:D

Keg lifts, followed by keg stands, followed by falling down. Then push ups to
get back back up so you can start the second set of reps.

I do squats when I brush my teeth and blow dry my hair in the morning. Seriously--it actually helps. Need to add cardio, working on that. Work keeps getting in the way. Stupid work.

Although I am partial to RR's approach. Alas I believe the shape it would put me in would be round(er)! :D

I'm in shape. Round is a shape. http://www.clicksmilies.com/s1106/huepfen/jumping-smiley-004.gif

I hike and run all year round so legs and lungs are ready for skiing. It's my head I need to get in training.....

Hiking all year round has helped me tremendously, mind body and soul and
I try to squeeze in climb time when ever I can

All of the above I do because I enjoy it, rather than doing it just to prepare for the ski season.

I've been watching allot of ski movies, which comes with the season

I don't really change my routine much as the season approaches. I go more reps/less weight, and a little more concentration on stretching the problem areas (hips particularly.)

Squats, lunges, step-ups.

No changes in ETOH intake. Tequilla and Fresca.

Squats, sit ups, jogging.
I've found beer provides essential nutrients required for skiing... So plenty of beer is a pre-season must.

... forgot wall-sits, too. I took a weight training class designed for skiing and it's all about the quads and the core.

I know for a fact that I enjoy the ski season a lot more when I'm in shape - but it's a totally crap shoot if I'll be in shape one it hits. This year I'm a lot more Jabba the Hut than Lance Armstrong.

Dreaming, doodling in classes (I should get a scanner), and general tomfoolery (like freestyle walking, ya heard?). Oh, also, my housemate has a tramp. oline. I go jump on it, and it's a great workout for the legs!

I started running stairs last year, but I quit in the spring when my knee started acting up. This summer while working in the whites, I had some minor issues with it, so I'm afraid of running stairs with it now. I hope I didn't do any major damage. Lately though, I've been packing on the gut. And not a beer one either, more like a milk gut. Mmmm, milk.

andrew mclean had the best answer, the typical skiers' workout consists of "wait training" ...

don't injure yourself

If one should happen to aggravate an old, untreated injury or even an old, treated injury, ASAP take advantage of Health Insurance and get it looked at by the best specialist available...even if one has to travel!

I used to try to increase my mountain biking to get into ski shape. Unfortunately I'm pretty much a gravity **** and it seemed every time I got close to "in shape" I got a season_delaying injury. Dislocated clavicles, the obligatory dislocated shoulders, yada yada. So now I get into ski shape by hanging out with people who are progressively in worse shape than I am. I start with some people at work who consider a Wii a workout, that makes me feel pretty good about myself. After a few weeks I go hang out with my neighbor who is a junk food, cigarette addicted alchoholic who's gut flaps as he rides his motorized scooter around. 'round this time I'm feeling pretty much ripped. Then I go hang around Market Basket during the day time so I can puff my chest out while standing next to 90 year old people arguing about the coupons they clipped. That sews it up and I head for the slopes a confident man.

what do i do to get in shape for the season? simple. never get out of shape.
my year round program is to never go more than two days in a row without at least a hard 2 hour workout. so, like this past week. 12 hour mtb race on the 20th (les and i got 2nd-not bad) followed by 2 rest days-much needed. next was 5 days in a row of 2-3 hour rides in the mtns of pennsyltucky of varying intensity. yesterday was a travel day and i just got back from a steady solo 2 hour ride at fort rock. so, got my 2 day rest and a bunch of cardio/power work on the mtb. this week will be a mix of surfing/mtb rides and possibly an 80 mile mtb ride on sunday-just another day. going to a ski show for ems for the next two days to check out all of the new gear and do mounting/boot fitting clinics, bringin the bike to ride before and after. i'll report back.

Typically, I do lots of split-squats (aka stationary lunges), step-ups, and lots of core training, especially exercises that rotate the trunk (I'm a boarder, so the range of trunk/hip rotation is generally wider than for skiing). Up the running miles.

Glad this thread was started, because I've been a lazy P.O.S. since Mt. Hood back in June. Patela tendonitis was nagging me recently (probably from basketball), so stopped running. Been getting to the climbing gym regularly, and outdoors sporadically, so I'm in okay shape physically, but the cardio is shyte right now. :(

Time to get motivated!!!!

Time to get motivated!!!!

I hear that. I haven't been over to BSC in the last month... I'm so lazy.

Gotta start up again. Need to lift and build strength, and ramp up the cardio.

My routine has been limited to push-ups latley... and not a whole lot yet either. So that doesn't help too much for skiing.

I did fix the treadmill. I think I'll go buy some new running shoes today - the pair I have now I ran a marathon in almost 2 years ago.

I wanted to do a bunch of hiking to get in shape for our Red Rocks trip (we fly out Saturday) but one weekend after another conspired against me and I haven't been able to do any hard hiking miles since one trip to Killington last month. I would have been good to go, but have spending a couple of weeks nursing a pulled hamstring. Ugh! The hike we did out to the High Peters Kill doesn't really count. All flat.
