Ski Magazine's June 2003 issue has an article on "Summer Skiing 2003: Chic-Chocs Mountains". Author David Healy writes
"True, for late-season skiing, the Eastern faithful rightly revel in the pilgrimage to New Hampshire's Tuckerman Ravine. But with all due respect to Mt. Washington, the unadulterated wilderness and vast quantity of skiing 450 miles northeast of Bangor, Maine, shames the Pinkham Notch mayhem."
I believe the key words are "450 miles northeast of Bangor, Maine." Perhaps I will use my transporter next year to check it out.

That place is to damn far for us NYers... At least this one... It's gotta be 20 hours away...
If I'm going to spend the time going there - I'd rather go to Colorado or BC.
It looks great though....

-BG Unacceptable. I know who MUST be behind this disgraceful report :disinfo:
I think we should draft a dis-response to the editor.
(I also agree with DMC - I drove 1140 miles during my trip to TR)

Sounds nice, but a 12 hour drive to hang out with Caribou? I'd rather drink beers with you guys at Tux...
So to make Tux beat the ChicChocs, we need to institute a 12 hr HOLDING pattern when you arrive.
</Sarcasm>
I agree: In the end though, it's too far. Tux is special. That it is right up the road is part of the appeal. I can wake up at home, do Tux, and be home with time for a nice dinner somewhere on the way back.

Ok I'll be curious and resourceful here by providing some links to some sites about the Chic-Chocs and Mt Logan....
Vertigo Ski Chic-Chocs (http://pwp.lino.com/vertigo/chics-chocs-e.html)
Choc Therapy (http://www.backcountrymagazine.com/artman/publish/article_140.shtml) (Backcountry Magazine)
Les Montagnes Chic-Chocs (First Tracks) (http://www.firsttracksonline.com/chicchocs.htm)
On another note... I wander if the article was inspired by the Gite du Mont-Albert resort mentioned at the bottom of the article. ;)

I have yet to make the trip, it's equal distance for me. But I've got a buddy who's been there twice and the pictures are to die for. Imagine 20 ravines the size of tuckermans, one after another after another. Most of which are accessed from the side of the road. It's not about the party or zoo like atmosphere of Tucks it's more about getting away and skiing. Plus people from Quebec know how to party so when the skiings done, I'm sure theres a party. Hopeing to make the trip next year.

As an aside from the direct topic...
Skimum,
You have an avitar! Cool. Even :disinfo: has an avitar! How can *I* make one?

M@ I could do that too, time-wise (3 hours each way plus the hike and ski) if I was, say 10 years younger.

The youngster will be at UMaine Farmington for a while, guess where he will go in the spring when Tucks is all done....
Chic Choc area group rate accomadations look good though...maybe next spring we could do a T4T road trip????

-BG BG, you are confusing your avatar with a graemlin. You do not get your own personal graemlin :skilas: :skicdave: :ma: :skistooge: :mumster: :disinfo: , until, at the very least, you become a member of the Toni Matt club. We will welcome you heartily, but until then you can not use the exec washrooms, sauna, or the secret tunnel to the ravine.

I could pull off a day trip, but it is a very long day... I do have friends in Eastport ME, which might make the trip to Chic Chocs a little more palatable. And I've always wanted to ski at... can't remember the name up around there somewhere

Bladegirl. You have posted 38 high quality postings to date. You need 100 postings to qualify for the illusive Toni Matt Club to get your own graemlin. (and pass the official Toni Matt questionaire :jumpturn: ). Only another 62 more postings to go!

Actually, :disinfo: has a dis-graemlin - he didn't earn his. The rest of us worked for ours. If you are not a dis, the only way is by making 100 posts, and then passing the TM screening test.

speaking of which :skicdave: , wouldn't this be a more appropriate photo for the Toni Matt Club emblem?

Yes both are Toni. But true.. that one is better and more recognizable. I'll see about replacing it.

And it is reasons like my blunder above that need to be overcome before I earn a graemlin as well. So the graemlin is made from one's avatar? Where do these terms come from any way?

BladeGirl:
Where do these terms come from any way? I've seen the term "avatar" at other websites and others also use "instant emotions". But, graemlins is a new term for me. Wherever the term came from, T4T must have one of the most ornate collections of them anywhere, thanks to :skicdave: .

Hey :mumster:
Both avatar and graemlin are very common terms. Avatars are supposed to be a representation of the individual. Graemlins were originally created as smilies in the form of images, but many sites now include a whole array of animated bouncing smilies of sorts (I find a lot of those annoying). Anyways graemlins can be used for more than just showing emotion. Graemlins have now evolved into just about anything, emotional or not... I chose to use them for items related to the topic of this site.
So now it is time to depart to the T4T :hottub: for a :beermug: before :toboggan: into :sleepingbag:

Hey Dave,
Speaking of Graemlins,
When can RR and DMC and I get ours? Or did we all fail our tests? :p

Sorry about that elwood. I'll prep one shortly (busy week here). I have started on the Toni Matt Club Exam however... it will be available shortly as a survey form you fill out online to activate your graemlin, so you better take it easy on the  and study up on him! :jumpturn:

Dave,
I have been in graduate school for the past year and-a-half. The beer hasn't slowed me down there, so I think I'll be ok! Can I get one of those study guides though?
No worries about the graemlins though, I know you are busy!!!
