Hiya:
I'm looking to get more time on the hill this winter; have my eyes on a few classics, like mousilaukee, persidential bowls, some of the old cut ski trails around - day trips and maybe overnights in the spring. The crown jewel would be a ski-in trip to Katahdin. Also interested in exploring slack-coutry trips from NE resorts.
I'm the wrong side of 40 with kids, so looking for similarly mellowed folks. Am on AT gear and resonably well experienced in the back-country.
Just looking to assemble some interested folks before the season is on us, so that it doesn't whizz by and suddenly it's summer again!
Please let me know if you're interested, and we can hook up for a beer and chat and hatch a few plans.... I am in Boston metro-west (Lexington / Waltham line)
Cheers, Geoff

Geoff, don't know what your plans are this evening, but there's a contingent of regulars from this forum meeting up at Redbone's BBQ in Davis Square tonight (see the T4T Events forum). Usually meet downstairs. Let us know in that forum if you plan to swing by, and how we might identify you (e.g., a specific hat, shirt, etc.).

Wrong side of 40 my ass. This guy rips.
I'll be up for some trips this winter (or earlier if we have another Halloween storm that dumps 7 feet of snow on Mt Washington.) In the meantime, give me a call if you want to go to the climbing gym or wakeboarding (what I'm doing this summer since I couldn't schedule any big trips down south to ski.)

Skiyak, got any room in the boat for a sort-of newbie wakeboarder? I have not been out all season, and missing it terribly.

Know any spots near Boston? I'd like to go after work if feasible. South Lake Cochituate looks good, but I don't think my boat will fit through the tunnel unless the water drops a foot or so, and I don't know of any ramps there.

I'd definitely throw my hat into the ring if someone was taking applications for a team for a winter trip to Katahdin. In fact I've even been working on my outdoor resume for that very purpose!

hey. thanks for the invite, but I guess I was not working in real time ;-) Tempting me to Redbones is never hard. I'll keep an eye on the forum and try to get down to a meet up some time soon.
Paul - I spotted ya there. Good to hear from you. Sounds like you're having a good summer.
GPetrics, and anyone else: Let's keep a dialog going on a tour into Katahdin. I'm going to start researching it. Anyone have info (like: best time to do it, booking the hut and/or camping, access times and all that?). In the meantime - anyone else interested, squeak up!
Cheers, Geoff

Wow, there is a solid showing of metro-west on this board. Good to know... I'm holed up in the fightin citya waltham these days myself.
Just finished rehab from shoulder surgery and I've been doing the road bike thing after work and on weekends in the western burbs. Quick hits ~20-30 miles if anyone is interested in partaking, let me know.

I hope you won't neglect walking with theose trekking poles on Prospect Hill. ROM recovery is good, Strength recovery is better, but best of all is useful movement recovery...check with your Orthopod or RPT about pole walking....which would likely progress to trail running with the poles :D
Natch, smart recovery is quickest....
To Much Too Soon* is a risky proposition at best and a real set back most of the time....the third possibility is something we should, but often don't, dread.
* TMTS, it's a drag!

Thanks for the tips RR, I've been hiking without poles (never hiked with them actually) and It hasn't been an issue for me. I am very weary of TMTS... it will be a long time before I forget what it felt like after the nerve block wore off, and that memory serves as a stark reminder to take my damn time. Hence less weight lifting, more saddle sores.

Aaaah, well then that makes sense. My injury wasn't rotator cuff, all labrum and lots of it. That being said, my biggest concern is falling outstretched. This season's motto is tuck and roll. I've never been one to use the poles as a crutch in any emergent situation - probably remnant of my father's choice to deprive me of poles long into my budding ski career, and well after most kids my age or ability level had started skiing with them. I did however dislocate my thumb 3 times this winter due to mis-placed handplants while trying to recover from doomed high speed tele turns.

Always up for mid-week, but requires some planning due to my 8 day schedule. With the cost of fuel, I absolutely need to be more social in my ski trips.
Much as I'd like, I don't think Katahdin is in the works for this season, but who knows.

I'm not sure if this is the best forum for this question, but I am looking to get started backcountry skiing this year and all of my ski partners just want to stick to lift-served for the time being. How would/should a newbie go about learning the ropes?
Hi aschir01, welcome!
The Appalachian Mountain Club organizes skill development day tours and even w/e tours for various levels. info here (http://www.outdoors.org/recreation/snow/index.cfm)
Depending on the sort of gear you may have, you might be able to do-it-yourself by looking up the easier tours in David Goodman's Backcountry Guides there is more info here (http://www.telemarktips.com/GoodmanFeature.html) BTW, the AMC publishes the guides.
Our own "Telemark" maintains a wonderful site which can provide many hours of excellent reading and will likely remain a resource for years to come. Hike The Whites is the name of the site here (http://hikethewhites.com/ski.html) is the skiing page.
Happy Trails!

I'm in Arlington Heights, so not far from you. I'm always looking for some partners for some AT adventures, so add me to your roll call and I'll do the same.

Geoff and any others - I'm a 36 year old with young kids so i dont get to the mountains as much as I would like, but I'm determined to change that this year. Stayed at Tucks for 4 days last May in the Hermit Lake Shelters and it was incredible. Can't wait to go back. I'm looking for anyone interested in back country trips, winter hiking/climbing, etc. My problem is that I live in too far from the mountains. Anyone else in the central Connecticut area? I'm in Waterbury. Anyone need a partner or forming groups for day trips/possible overnight skiing/hiking/climbing let me know. I'm tired of skiing blues with the family.

Just a quick follow up to my previous post - are there any worthwhile backcountry ski experiences to be had within about 3 hours of central Connecticut? I love Tucks but its too damn far from my house to go for a day trip - although i might be convinced if someone shared the driving. Bye the way, all though these are my first posts, I've been an avid reader of this forum since April. The way you guys took care of the caretaker who had his skiis stolen was awesome. Way to go -
Dfarr30, do a web Search on Mt Greylock (in NW MA).
Temple Mountain is Private, but the Wapack Trail is a challenging metal edge light ski tour.
Go to Topo Zone or use your own purchased topo map software to look for Northerly aspects of hills and mountains in parks and other public lands. Some of those will undoubtedly have been skied/ridden. It may be a long process, but the time taken to explore for good opportunities will open some of that terrain to your kids when they are ready.

Not anymore. It is now state reserve. I did a recon up there a couple of weeks back, and found the trails are really overgrown with scrub alreadt, but there are a few lines to be found.

I can 2nd that report... Now if there were happen to be Bird Watching groups taking care of some of the 'access trails' then there may be hope after all. I got 2 double double(quad) chairs from Temple a few yrs ago. They're great in my back yard!

I lived right next to temple through my High School years. I have a lot of memories at that place and would hate to seeit become totally grown over. I I would have loved to get one of the old chairs from that place. I ve never seen a quad like that one anywhere else.
